In AMERICAN FICTION, Thelonious "Monk" Ellison watches his life as a celebrated author and literature professor slowly fall apart. His students frustrate him and his family is in crisis. Publishers accuse him of not writing "black enough" and are therefore hardly interested in his work. Meanwhile, his competitors wallow in ghetto clichés and are frenetically celebrated for it.

Finally, Monk has a meltdown: he writes a novel under a pseudonym that really does contain all the clichés about black people. What he didn't expect: the book becomes a bestseller and he now has to deal with the monster he created out of spite.
