Ambawi Suramis tsichisa
Fantastic visual worlds unfold in the symmetrical and rigorously composed, yet extremely lavish tableaus, through which Paradzhanov and Abashidze tell an archaic Georgian legend. In order to repel Persian invasions, the inhabitants of a remote mountain region attempt to build a fortress. According to a prophecy, the construction can only be successfully completed when a young warrior allows himself to be walled in alive... The incredibly rich array of images is adorned with countless pieces of fabric, carpets, animals, and art objects, around which the characters of the film revolve. Carla Rhode: "Even the landscape becomes a fantastic backdrop in which the actors move like performers in a theater of life." (red)
