Amazing Grace
Nothing in Jonathan's life is going the way he wants it to. His lover has left him for someone else and stolen his cannabis stash. He is also constantly arguing with his mother, for whom he also works. The only ray of hope in this dreary situation is Thomas, who has just returned from New York and lives in the flat above him. At first, his interest in Jonathan is based solely on his addiction to hard drugs, which he hopes to satisfy through the younger man. But in the moments when all is quiet around them, Jonathan catches glimpses of the deep loneliness that fills Thomas. For Thomas has a secret that he is not willing to tell anyone.
AMAZING GRACE transforms everyday conflicts into a heavenly vision of love in the face of omnipresent suffering. As the first film to deal with the effects of the AIDS crisis on Israeli society, it is also closely linked to the director's biography. Amos Guttman, a pioneer of New Queer Cinema in Israel who made uncompromisingly queer and politically challenging films, died on 16 February 1993 at the age of 38. His influence can still be felt today in the films of Israeli directors such as Eytan Fox and Tomer Heymann. A master of poetic cinema who is well worth rediscovering!
