Am Beispiel 33/38 – Zwischenbilanz einer Generation
A two-part interview film, Frankfurter's first major achievement:
13 people from Austria and four from Germany, all born in 1933 or 1938, reflect on behalf of a generation on whether and how history has shaped them. As different as the backgrounds and lives of the interviewees are - from the crane operator from Linz to the housewife from Vienna and the school headmaster from Tyrol to the publishing editor from Salzburg - their experiences with school and parental home are very similar: in both places, the Nazi era was hushed up and any confrontation with the past was shifted onto their generation.
‘Austrians have a disturbed relationship with history,’ says the well-known journalist Kurt Wimmer in an interview, summarising what was to become the lifelong theme of the young filmmaker Bernhard Frankfurter. (Michael Omasta)
