ALS ICH TOT WAR / SCHUHPALAST PINKUS
15.12. 18:00 with live musical accompaniment by Heidi Fial
Two early works in which Lubitsch himself can also be seen in front of the camera: ALS ICH TOT WAR is considered the oldest surviving work and was thought to have been lost until the 1990s. He plays the flighty husband who repeatedly goes over the top and is reprimanded by his wife. Until it gets too much for him, he fakes his suicide and returns to the household disguised as a servant ... For the first time, actor Lubitsch tries to escape his role type with this serious character - which is only partially successful given the extremely comical moments. In SCHUHPALAST PINKUS, however, as a young, impetuous salesman, he lives out his preference for anarchic humour - and for situations set in department stores - without restraint. (Florian Widegger)
