Alien
A spaceship as an eerie womb, with deadly danger lurking in its dark corners. An on-board computer called “Mother” who betrays her children, the crew, and thus exposes them to this danger in the first place. A primal scene in which a man becomes the “victim” of penetration and fertilization, the aggressiveness of which is only surpassed by the subsequent birth scene. A phallic monster that is also a vagina dentata; and in the middle of it all, Sigourney Weaver, who manages to destroy both monster and mother, even saving a cute kitten in the process. ALIEN creates horror by using Freudian symbolism to speak of themes of birth, motherhood, sexuality and the (male) fears surrounding them. Complex science fiction cinema, multi-layered reading and viewing!
