Aktorzy prowincjonalni (Provincial Actors)
The feature film debut of Agnieszka Holland, probably the best-known Polish filmmaker today, revolves around the question of what it actually means to make art. For the aspiring actor Krzysztof, the leading role in a theatre play is a great opportunity, for the already famous director from the city it is little more than routine. Worlds collide, and the stubborn enthusiasm of one will cost the other more than just the support of the ensemble ... The laconic comedy serves as an allegory of the repressive conditions to which artists of all kinds were exposed behind the Iron Curtain, and proves to be a ‘lovingly critical to ironically sarcastic picture of the Polish cultural scene’ (Josef Schnelle). Honoured with the FIPRESCI Prize in Cannes. (Florian Widegger)
