In a Swedish maternity clinic in 1914, three women prepare for the birth of their children. Adèle (Gunnel Lindblom), Agda (Harriet Andersson) and Angela (Gio Petré) not only represent different social classes, they also reflect different facets of life as a woman at the beginning of the 20th century. Whether poor or rich, all three experience abuse, emotional cruelty and forced integration into a restrictive society. Mai Zetterling's feature film debut distilled a gripping narrative from the seven-volume novel Fräulein von Pahlen by Swedish feminist Agnes von Krusenstjerna – translated into bold images by cinematographer Sven Nykvist – and caused a stir with its frank portrayal of open sexuality, lesbian relationships and explicit birth scenes. Before that: In Möte med Mai, Zetterling recounts how she paved her way as a celebrated actress into the male-dominated profession of film director. (E.S.)
