FromPier Paolo Pasolini

Year1961

Duration120min.

In his first directorial work, Pasolini focussed on the low-income suburbs of Rome. The miracolo economico, the economic boom, has not penetrated here. Some of the men are pimps, including Vito, who has little mercy for either women or himself.
Pasolini's unsparing portrayal of the milieu caused displeasure, particularly because of the combination with sacred music and visual composition. For the then amateur actor Franco Citti, himself from a poor background, this first leading role was the start of a great acting career.
