It's about Anita G. Her parents were persecuted as Jews, then as capitalists in the GDR. Anita G. comes to the West. With her suitcase in hand, she encounters strange people and gets to know a strange country: the Federal Republic of Germany in 1966. The ‘farewell to yesterday’ that Alexander Kluge's feature film debut articulates is not an easy thing historically, even if one believes in the ‘zero hour,’ the ‘grace of late birth,’ or the ‘economic miracle.’ Anita G. from the GDR is the personification of this repressed past, which is why she lacks the prerequisites to successfully integrate into West German society. It is not her fault that she rubs people up the wrong way. Abschied von gestern shows how she rubs people up the wrong way in almost documentary-like scenes that testify to a confident sense of the grotesque moments of everyday life. (C.S.)
