A Woman of Paris
Because her parents are against marriage, Jean and Marie decide to flee to Paris. But then he backs out and the young woman suddenly finds herself alone in the big city, where after a while she becomes the mistress of a rich man. Marie longs for a family of her own, however, and one day she meets Jean again by chance ... Audiences loved Chaplin for his comedies, but were not impressed by his foray into drama (in which he only makes one mini-appearance in front of the camera). Although the groundbreaking, modern production found prominent advocates (including Ernst Lubitsch), it was a commercial failure, which Chaplin withdrew for 50 years after censorship interventions and only released again shortly before his death.
