A Story About Fire
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD RED LOTUS 2025
Stories about how fire came to humans or how humans learned to use fire for themselves are as old as mankind itself. A legend attributed to the Qiang minority, native to southwest China, tells of how the monkey Ranbiwa, who grew up with humans, sets off for the Sacred Mountain to steal fire. At his side is his dear friend, the wolf Doggie: they are an unequal, yet completely inseparable pair and go on the wildest adventures together - (not always successful) carnivorous forays included. Not only the captivating ink drawings, but also the subversive humor underpinning the narrative make this work a special treat for young, old and everyone in between. The film can therefore be seen as a congenial return to the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, whose workshops have produced countless animated films with cult status since it was founded in 1957, most notably the legendary character of Monkey King in JOURNEY TO THE WEST.
