A Chump at Oxford

FromALFRED J. GOULDING

Year1940

Duration63min.

Who would have thought that simply throwing a banana peel on the floor would pay off? But the discarded remnant "catches" a fleeing bank robber and earns Stan and Ollie a scholarship to Oxford. There, maltreated by fellow students, Stan suffers a split personality due to a blow to the head and from then on presents himself as a rich, intelligent and sporty aristocrat who hires Ollie as a servant ... After a creative break for the duo, even writer Graham Greene rejoices: "Laurel and Hardy are back! That's more cheering news than any good tidings that newspapers usually announce. A CHUMP AT OXFORD is one of their best films, which in the judgement of some detractors is more enjoyable than Chaplin's. Their clowning is pure. Her clowning is pure." (red)
