À bout de souffle (Außer Atem)
The essence of the new spirit that was to refresh the viewing habits of cinema audiences around 1960 could hardly be more concentrated than in Godard's first feature film: a book idea by François Truffaut, technical know-how from Claude Chabrol, acting verve from Jean-Paul Belmondo, who, together with Jean Seberg, became an icon of the New Wave. They all escort the director on his creatively innovative hunt for the scoundrel Michel Poiccard, who would so much like to make a lasting impression on Patricia, the intern at the Paris office of the New York Herald Tribune. While Godard breaks with the past in terms of form, in terms of content he anticipates what is in the air. In the impossible love story between the rebel Michel and Patricia, who is trying to live a new form of female independence, forces are already rubbing against each other that will be unleashed at the end of the decade.
