9 to 5
Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have been known as the dream couple of friends since at least seven seasons of ‘Grace and Frankie’ (2025–2022). It all started with a comedy about women's work, whose theme song is still familiar to everyone today – it was written by country, queer and all-round icon Dolly Parton.
"Workin' 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin'
Barely gettin' by, it's all takin' and no givin'
They just use your mind and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it"
In 1979, Jane Fonda's friend, activist Karen Nussbaum, brought to her attention the ubiquitous problem of sexual harassment, of women being passed over in the workplace by the men they themselves had trained, of people earning so little that they needed food stamps. Nussbaum's organisation was called ‘9to5: Organisation for Women Office Workers’.
