On 23 December 1993, 19-year-old student Maximilian B. shot three people in a branch of a Viennese bank and shortly afterwards killed himself with a shot to the head. This intertitle opens the film, which begins on Christmas Eve and is presented without commentary in the spirit of classical modernist narrative traditions. Seventy-one vignettes show one or many possible backstories, the genesis of which takes place primarily in the minds of the audience. Until the violence announced in the opening credits erupts as unsurprisingly as it does explosively. The outcome of the story is therefore already clear at the beginning; in between lies an associative chronicle – composed of montages of TV clips, fragmentary everyday scenes and brief dialogues – that is anything but arbitrary, depicting people who have nothing in common other than the fact that they happen to be victims of this perpetrator. A film about the reality of our perception, contrary to the false wholes pretended by the mainstream. (K.M.)
