2551.01 – The Kid

FromNorbert Pfaffenbichler

Duration65min.

With his 2551 trilogy, Nobert Pfaffenbichler has presented a play (film) culmination of his vision of the grotesque. We are celebrating the conclusion of this (nightmarish) feat with the first ever performance of all three parts in one go. In 2551.01, a century after the Chaplin classic The Kid, its basic idea was transplanted into a future that seems both dystopian and absurd. The declining tendencies of the present in parodic exaggeration: people only live underground, wear bizarre masks without exception and there is a constant battle between anarchy and state power. Instead of Chaplin's lovable Tramp, it is a man in a monkey mask who takes care of an abandoned child and staggers with him through the labyrinth of hell, in hypnotic sequences of scenes between silent film slapstick and splatter punk, accompanied by irresistible and idiosyncratic cascades of music.
