Whether tragic or glorious – most achievements in mountaineering are told as heroic exploits. This is also true of the official account of the first ascent of K2 by an Italian expedition in 1954. But behind the triumph lies a story of slander. Reinhold Messner has investigated it. His new documentary K2 – THE GREAT DISPUTE powerfully shows how quickly solidarity between climbing partners can turn into betrayal and deceit – and follows the trail of the man who lost everything: Walter Bonatti. After years of accusations and attempts to discredit him, he was officially rehabilitated only in 2008. Combining gripping archive footage with meticulous reconstructions, Messner retraces what really happened.
The accompanying short film MOVING HIMALAYAS, by Salzburg-based director Julio Valero, takes us to Nepal – to the icy flanks of Annapurna and into the daily lives of Nepalese children. It shows how solidarity and commitment can transform lives and pays tribute to the legacy of Spanish alpinist Iñaki Ochoa de Olza, who died on the south face of Annapurna in 2008.
