25/G2: Yanomami – 30 Jahre später

FromAndreas Sulzer

Year1995

Duration50min.

LanguageGerman

Deep in the ocean of the Orinoco rainforest lives one of South America's most isolated indigenous peoples: the Yanomami. Language, rituals, everyday life – shaped by millennia of isolation. But their habitat is shrinking, threatened by the inexorable advance of raw material extraction. Three decades ago, Salzburg painter Thomas Höfinger and Linz filmmaker Andreas Sulzer set out to explore this world. In their luggage: canvases, paints, the idea of an encounter beyond words. The result was an experiment – the first painting project involving an ethnic group that had never encountered Western painting before.

The film tells of arduous marches through the jungle, of cautious approaches, of amazement at the art of others – and of the delicate growth of trust. More than an art project, it is a testimony to two worlds cautiously touching each other.

Thomas Höfinger and Andreas Sulzer will be guests at the screening and will provide insight into an adventure from a time when mobile phones and GPS signals were only known from hearsay.
