What is IF YOU ARE AFRAID YOU PUT YOUR HEART INTO YOUR MOUTH AND SMILE about?

Marie Luise Lehner’s debut film tells the story of Anna and her deaf mother Isolde and is about what it’s like to turn the shame of one’s origins into pride, about affection, care and solidarity.

Twelve-year-old Anna moves from secondary school to grammar school. Things are different here: the children at the new school come from a completely different social class. Anna begins to feel ashamed of her background and her deaf mother. Anna has to pretend to be ill during the ski week. The money set aside for the ski course is used to buy a sofa bed, which is intended to give her mother a sexual relationship and her daughter a little more privacy.

Mara, a friend in the class, becomes an ally when it turns out that she too is hiding a secret. WENN DU ANGST HAST NIMMST DU DEIN DEIN DEN MUND UND LÄCHELST tells of a journey that leads from shame to pride and explores what it is like to learn to stand up for yourself. A narrative of hope, affection, mutual care and solidarity.
