What’s HOW TO BE NORMAL AND THE ODDNESS OF THE OTHER WORLD about?

Pia is in her mid-twenties and somehow lost. Freshly released from a psychiatric ward, she returns to the old nursery in her parents’ house and takes on a temporary job in her father’s office. But everything seems to have changed somehow since she has been out again. The wounds of the past run deep and nobody believes that Pia is even halfway normal anymore. Neither her ex-boyfriend, nor her parents, nor her colleagues at her new job. Only the 12-year-old boy next door, Lenni, is fascinated by her. He feels just as trapped as Pia in his world of school, homework and a busy schedule. Elfie, Pia’s mum, is consumed by her worries that Pia’s illness could break out again and almost loses herself. And her father, Klaus, does everything he can to integrate Pia into the world as he sees fit and steer her back on the right track.

Then there is Joni, Pia’s ex-boyfriend. Severely traumatised by the events of the past, he wants nothing more than the old Pia back. But does she even still exist? Did she ever exist?
Everyone means well. Everyone wants to help. Everyone has expectations and ideas about what Pia should be like. But maybe that’s part of the problem?

While Pia tries to fight her way through a jungle of opinions, medication and prejudices in order to restore her self-image, she is confronted with the problem of how she should be.
