Bill McKay: The time has passed when you can turn your back on the fundamental needs of the people. Bill McKay (Robert Redford), ein idealistischer Anwalt und Sohn eines ehemaligen Gouverneurs, wird überredet, als demokratischer Herausforderer gegen einen scheinbar unschlagbaren republikanischen Amtsinhaber anzutreten. Anfangs darf er sagen, was er denkt, doch je näher der Wahltag rückt, desto mehr wird seine Botschaft geglättet, angepasst, entkernt. Der Wahlkampf wird zur Farce, und McKay zum Produkt.
